The Indispensable Washable Wool Blanket
You come in from spending the morning in the raking leaves in the foggy November chill, ready to relax and warm up. You fix yourself a cup of hot cocoa, grab your book and settle in on the soft couch to read and sip. Your toes are still cold, so you pull the wool blanket from the back of the couch and cuddle into it and start reading.
What a lovely picture! For many people, just the thought of being under a blanket, whether while falling asleep in bed or just sitting on the couch watching your favorite TV show, makes them feel all warm and cozy. Blankets are essential in the winter, and having a throw handy in living spaces is definitely a good idea.
Throws can be made of all types of material. Chenille, cotton, and wool are common types. Of the three, wool blankets are certainly the warmest. The natural fibers are woven together to create a soft, cozy blanket that looks perfect when folded or draped across a piece of furniture.
Wool serves the same purpose for us when we wear it or use a blanket made of it that it does for the sheep from which it comes. The thick coat provides all the warmth that the sheep needs to keep them safe through the winter. It is excellent and keeping in the body’s warmth while still allowing it to breathe.
Wool also is good at regulating the body temperature. It will not warm you up and keep you so warm that you get overheated. Instead it will keep in as much warmth as you need, while still letting your skin breathe.
One problem that many have with wool is that it can be difficult to clean. A throw in your living room might be heavily used. If you have a large family or spend a lot of time in the living room you may use the blanket every day. It can become dirty very quickly and needs to be washed regularly. It would seem that a woolen blanket would be a headache to keep clean.
Fortunately you can get a washable wool blanket that gives you the warmth you need without the headache of special cleaning instructions. A washable wool blanket can be washed by hand in cold water or even in a washing machine, making it as easy as any other type of blanket to keep, while still having that natural appearance and feel.
Washable wool blankets come in many sizes and patterns. Some are made without any dyes but have different colors from different colors of sheep. They are an excellent addition to any living area, and look great as an extra blanket at the foot of your bed.
